Oktoberfest
Celebrate the area’s German heritage at the 5th annual Oktoberfest downtown. This family-friendly festival has authentic German food, live traditional German music, polka dancing with traditional outfits, activities for kids, and more than 40 types of domestic and German beer.
There will be several fun contests, and vendors will include Saums Market, Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, and Wurst und Bier. You can hear live music from Fred Zwich and His International Sound Machine. This polka band is from Cleveland, and they were finalists for the Grammy Award for polka in 2007. Fred Zwich also received a lifetime achievement award from the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame. He became part of the International Polka Music Hall of Fame in 2017.
You can also hear Aaron Dussing & Polka Revolution. This artist sings in eight languages, and he specializes in Alpine yodeling. He can also play 20 different musical instruments. Oktoberfest is on Saturday, September 28 from 2:00 to 10:30 p.m. If you choose to volunteer, you’ll get a free T-shirt and free admission. The Hancock Historical Museum holds this annual event, and all proceeds support the museum.
The Christmas in October Arts and Crafts Show
The Christmas in October Arts and Crafts Show will be on October 5 and 6 at the Hancock County Fairgrounds. It will be open on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can check out more than 300 exhibits with artists and craftspeople from eight states and over 120 cities. This huge show will cover 11 buildings, one large tent, and dozens of outdoor locations.
You can visit this event to buy repurposed or recycled items, furniture, home decor, jewelry, garden art, clothing, delicious food, and more. There will be entertainers with balloon animals, bouncy houses, pony rides, face painting, 22 different food vendors so far, and many other attractions. Parking is free, and the festival will give a prize to a new visitor every half hour.
Seasonal Train Rides
Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation, Inc. is a volunteer organization that promotes the history of the railroad in the region. From September 21 to October 20, you can ride the quarter-scale Pumpkin Train. You can also pick your own pumpkins. The Halloween Express happens on October 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. It features attractive Halloween lights and displays along the tracks. There’s also a museum about railroads in the area and a gift shop that’s open all year.
